What I Believe About Education
My Teaching Philosophy sets a foundation that guides my beliefs, opinions, and decisions that I make as a professional educator.
I believe schools are communities of educators and learners. Schools are safe environments where students are given opportunities to grow cognitively and socially, gain knowledge and insights on a daily basis, and broaden their understanding of the world around them. For young students especially, school may be the only source of security, routine, and certainty in their life. I also believe schools are meant to prepare students as critical thinkers, independent and cooperative workers, and responsible, active members of a global society.
I believe classrooms are welcoming to all students. Classrooms are one of many environments that conduct student learning and should be filled with appropriate and relevant materials and resources used to facilitate student growth. Student should feel safe and comfortable in their classroom. Elementary classrooms should be equipped with manipulatives, tech tools, reference materials, and a library of age appropriate reading material. Classrooms give both educators and learners a space to learn, move, collaborate, and focus.
I believe ALL learners deserve equal opportunities regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, background, or learning style. As an educator, it is my job to accommodate for each individual student. Learners are diverse in the way they think, learn, and act. Education is not "one size fits all" and I believe that my students should have opportunities to learn in ways that are most effective for them personally. I also believe it is important for students to feel loved, valued, heard, and respected. Learners should feel motivated and confident in their ability to learn.
I believe learning is best achieved through equitable teaching. Learning should be standard based and student lead. I believe learning is best achieved through guided discussions, questioning, and application. Learning should address misconceptions, relate to student interests and backgrounds, and information should be mastered and connect to the real world before advancing forward. Learning can be cultivated through a variety of experiences such field trips, guest speakers, outdoor lessons, technology integration, cross curricular connections, reading, and real world applications. I also think that learning needs to be facilitated in a child’s home environment as much as possible. Parents should be involved in their child’s education as much as possible and help create a positive mindset about learning. I also think that community involvement is important for learning and should be integrated into a classrooms curriculum or units of study.
I believe knowledge is attained as students develop more complex understandings of subject matter and material. I believe that there is much greater worth in knowing and understanding fewer topics, rather than having a more shallow or incomplete understanding of a wide range of topics. I believe that a student’s knowledge of subjects should be attained by learning “depth over breadth". A deeper understandings of fewer subjects is more valuable and sustainable than shallow knowledge.
I believe teaching involve research based strategies, discipline plans, and classroom management skills. As an educator, I believe that my teaching should address a broad range of learners. Teaching helps students find pathways to success by introducing students to new knowledge and new opportunities for growth. Teaching should challenge students and inspire them to do their best work. Teaching should motivate students to love learning and help them explore their own questions and understandings about the world around them.
Overall, I think that schools and educators help change lives and leave lasting impressions on the students they serve. As an educator, it is important to carry this set of beliefs and principles with me as I keep learning about best practice within a classroom.
