Thing 17- Evaluation and Assessment
In this module, I began by learning about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). FERPA is a government right that applies to all schools that protects student education records by keeping them private. The HIPAA protects individual health information as well as patients rights about safety and health. It is important for teachers to understand both of these laws and rights in order to know what is appropriate for sharing, collection, and providing access to school data. I took a pre-quiz on both of these Acts and I did not do very well the first time around, however I did much better on the post-quiz after learning more in depth about this topic. It is so important for schools and teachers to keep all information on their students and their identities private. Identity is very precious in today's world and private information needs to be kept private in order to prevent it from being stolen or abused. Keeping this information private is a schools responsibility especially when it comes to information shared on the web.
Next, I learned about the four main types of using technology for classroom data collection (T3PD Model). In education, there are four main types of data collection: demographic, achievement, process, and perception. Each of these types of data collection are important and will be something I will use in my classroom one day, and technology can only make collection more helpful and efficient for everyone involved. In most states schools are required to track and report this data as part of their school improvement reporting and having online and technology resources to help with this process is a huge help. Using technology to help with assessment and evaluations can create an educational environment that puts school first and makes assessment a very accessible and do-able process.
I created my own online assessment that was able to gather answers, thoughts, and opinions-otherwise known as a poll. Using this online assessment tools will definitely make a difference in your classroom by making it easier to collect data from my students or parents. I created my poll on PollEverywhere.com and it was a great website resource that I can use in the future. I was able to make my own questions, set how I want to assess and collect the answers (multiple choice, short answers, etc.) and how I would like to view the results and data that I collect (data table, bar graph, pie chart, etc.). Below are a few screenshots of the website I used, me creating the poll questions, as well as a graph that I will collect my data with. This web resource it wonderful because you can collect poll answers through email, text, phone, or online access. I will definitely use this resource in my classroom.
